Youth Theatre at the U (YTU)
In June 2022, Bryce was hired as an assistant teacher at the University of Utah’s award-winning Youth Theatre at the U (YTU) for its summer theatre school sessions. During his first summer, he worked with 1st-3rd grade students and 4th-6th grade musical theatre students, assisting in performances of The Sneetches and The Magic School Bus. From there, he became a consistent presence in YTU’s after-school theatre programs, contributing as an assistant director and choreographer for the youth cast of multiple productions, including Seussical (Youth Edition), The SpongeBob Musical (Youth Edition), The Claw, Tweet!, Press Start, Into the Forest, Mythic Quest, and the world premiere of Charting Neverland.
A year after joining YTU, Bryce was promoted to lead teacher, expanding his role in directing and adapting musicals for students in grades 1-12. In addition to his directing work, he has taught a variety of electives, including Musical Theatre Ensemble, Musical Theatre Dance, and Comedy Improv. His approach emphasizes immersive storytelling, engaging staging, and dynamic choreography, ensuring that each performance fosters creativity, collaboration, and confidence among young performers. He has also written original short pieces for students to perform, further enriching their theatrical experience.
Bryce’s knowledge in choreographing dance numbers ensures that routines accommodate various skill levels while enhancing stage presence. He emphasizes rhythm, spatial awareness, and seamless transitions, encouraging performers to work cohesively as an ensemble. His vocal direction prioritizes pitch, harmonization, and breath control, allowing students to build vocal strength and confidence. Additionally, he arranges medleys that highlight individual strengths while maintaining a cohesive and engaging performance.
Beyond his work in musical theatre, Bryce has also helped coach YTU’s Conservatory students in their Shakespeare pieces for the Utah Shakespeare Competition, providing guidance on text interpretation, delivery, and stage presence.
After earning his degree from the University of Utah, Bryce was offered a role as an associate instructor with YTU under the leadership of Program Director Penelope Caywood. In this capacity, he serves as an office administrator, teaches after-school programs, and assists with theatre residencies in elementary schools throughout the valley. His dedication to arts education continues to shape and inspire young performers, fostering a love for theatre that extends beyond the stage.
